Senior Legal Counsel and Privacy Officer
Job Overview:
We are seeking a highly capable and commercially minded Senior Legal Counsel and Privacy Officer to provide strategic legal, regulatory, and compliance guidance across the organization. As a trusted advisor, you will proactively identify legal and regulatory risks, interpret emerging trends and developments, provide clear recommendations to stakeholders, and maintain accountability for the quality and integrity of legal advice and documentation issued by the function. You will also play a key role in keeping senior leadership informed of material legal and compliance matters, while fostering strong collaborative relationships across the organization to promote a culture of compliance, governance, and business partnership.
Your work life:
- Identify, plan, strategize, develop, manage and improvise compliance framework applicable to the Company.
- Perform periodic review to identify, assess and prioritize the legal and regulatory requirements set out by regulators relevant to the Company.
- Lead and conduct awareness and training on compliance for the management and employees of the Company.
- Serve as the main point of contact within the organization for staff members, regulators, and relevant public authorities on issues related to data protection.
- Assist HOD/HOU in implementing and maintaining data protection governance framework including formulating relevant policies, procedures, processes, guidelines or manuals on the management of Legal and Compliance Risks and/or the management of the Legal Division’s processes.
- Monitor compliance with data protection laws and internal policies through audits and regular reviews.
- Review and advise on internal and external compliance documents and contractual requirements.
- Lead or support incident response for personal data breaches, internal escalation including assessment, and notification.
- Manage, monitor and supervise matters under his/her area of responsibilities with the objective of ensuring that legal and financial exposure are mitigated & other risks are minimized and the most favourable outcomes are achieved.
- Prepare, develop, review, monitor and enhance agreements/legal documents and ensure all legal documents and advisory produced by the unit are registered and kept in accordance with the Legal Division’s policies and procedures.
- Advise and provide legal opinion based on thorough research and study of the latest legal development and take into account Company’s business need and direction.
- Develop, review, monitor and enhance Legal Division’s policies and procedures and provide training to stakeholders as and when required.
- Attend all meetings, discussions and negotiation with internal clients as well as with external parties as the case may be pertaining to the subject matter assigned as well as preparation of the minutes of meeting or notes of discussion post meeting.
To be considered, you’ll need:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in law, called to the Bar and having professional certifications in data privacy are highly desirable.
- Experience: At least 10 years in an in-house legal role with at least 2 years focused on data privacy. Exposure to commercial contracts and regulatory matters.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficient in data protection, privacy compliance and contract law.
- Strong understanding of Malaysian PDPA and global privacy standard.
- Proactive, organised and collaborative with strong sense of ownership.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex issues.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
- Adaptable mindset with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
