Access Network Engineer

The position reports to the Lead, Access Network

 

Job Overview:

The job of an Access Network Engineer involves overseeing the design, installation, and maintenance of communication networks, particularly metro-E and fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) networks. Some of the key responsibilities include planning, designing, testing, and commissioning new access network projects. As well as conducting site surveys, and overseeing equipment delivery.

 

Your work life:

  • Oversee and manage the planning, design, testing, and commissioning of new access network projects, including Metro-E and FTTH.

  • Conduct site surveys, and ensure equipment delivery, installation and configuration.

  • Serve as the main point of contact for all implementation tasks, such as new activation, migration, relocation and decommissioning.

  • Develop network designs, including IPv4 and IPv6 arrangements, and coordinate with relevant parties to ensure project completion within the specified timeline.

  • Ensure that IP access network capacity is managed efficiently to prevent any issues with service delivery to customers.

  • Develop and execute project work plans, and make revisions as necessary to meet changing requirements.

  • Ensure that all identified and budgeted projects are completed within the determined timeline and budget.

  • Configure various network equipment, including routers, switches, OLT GPON, MDU, MSAN, and IP DSLAM equipment.

  • Prepare handover reports for the service operation team once tasks are completed.

  • Provide project cost estimates through Time2Quote system.

  • Conduct proof of concept tests for new equipment and services in response to tenders.

To be considered, you’ll need:

  • Bachelor Degree in Electrical, Electronics or Telecommunications Engineering, Information Technology/Computer Science from a recognized institution.

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in the telecommunications industry with expertise in network design, planning, configuration, implementation, and operational support.

  • Prior work experience in a telecommunications or network provider company is a plus.

  • Familiarity with various networking products such as Cisco, Juniper, Alcatel, and Huawei.

  • Experience in determining the capacity requirements of IP core systems and network elements.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and high levels of discipline, organization, punctuality, and effective communication abilities with individuals at all levels.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

 

Competencies

(Required Technical Skills/ Personal Attributes on)

  • Skilled in system administration and configuration of network equipment such as routers, switches, and OLT FTTH

  • In-depth knowledge of TCP/IP standards and protocols, IP network architecture, and routing configuration.

  • Familiarity with IP networks routing configurations such as OSPF, ISIS, BGP, VPN, and MPLS (L2VPN, IP VPN), Segment routing

  • Strong foundation in TDM/PDH/SDH/DWDM/PON technologies and standards

  • Self-motivated with a desire to stay up-to-date with the latest technology developments and strong analytical, planning, and decision-making skills

  • Proficient in computer systems, including Windows, UNIX, and Microsoft Office productivity suite

  • Strong problem-solving abilities with excellent analytical skills to isolate root causes

  • Collaborative team player with a results-oriented, self-motivated, and independent work style

  • Strong presentation, analytical, and report-writing skills.
